Holy Saturday Reflection: Waiting in Hope

by Sr. Previladge Gunyere

Holy Saturday is a quiet, sacred pause between the sorrow of Good Friday and the joy of Easter Sunday. It is a day of silence, uncertainty, and deep waiting. Jesus lies in the tomb. The disciples are scattered, grieving, and afraid. It seems as though all hope has been buried.

Yet, this is not a day of despair—it is a day of hidden hope.

Holy Saturday reminds us that God is still at work, even when nothing seems to be happening. In the stillness of the tomb, a great mystery is unfolding. Death does not have the final word. Life is preparing to break forth.

This day speaks to all the “in-between” moments of our lives:

  • When prayers seem unanswered
  • When suffering feels overwhelming
  • When the future is uncertain

It is in these moments that God invites us to trust—not in what we see, but in His promise.

Holy Saturday teaches us that silence is not absence. God is present, even in the darkness.

In a noisy world, Holy Saturday invites us into stillness. It is in silence that we begin to hear God more deeply. Take time to pray, reflect, and simply be with the Lord.

On this day, we are called to remain present, like Mary and the faithful women, even in sorrow. Waiting is not passive; it is an act of trust. We hold on, believing that God is faithful.

Therefore, even when everything seems lost, hope remains. Let us stand in solidarity with those who suffer, especially those who are affected by the ongoing wars around the world.

This day connects us to all who feel abandoned, grieving, or lost. We are invited to be present to others with compassion and quiet support. Let us pray for the peace that comes with resurrection.
