In October 2024, I had the distinct privilege of serving as an assistant at the Synod, a significant moment in the life of the global Church. It was a humbling experience to witness the Church’s ongoing discernment, as voices from every corner of the world came together to seek the Holy Spirit’s guidance on matters essential to the Church’s mission.
As an assistant, I had a unique perspective. My role, though behind the scenes, allowed me to observe the profound dedication and sincerity of the participants – bishops, priests, religious, and laity alike. Their shared commitment to listening, dialogue, and prayer highlighted the Synod’s collaborative spirit.
The discussions were wide-ranging, touching on issues that directly impact the Church’s pastoral and evangelizing work. I found myself deeply moved by the emphasis on inclusion and accompaniment, themes that resonate with our call to serve as followers of Christ. In a world often divided by ideologies, the Synod’s emphasis on unity, charity, and mission was a refreshing reminder of the Church’s role as a beacon of hope.
Perhaps the most touching aspect of my experience was witnessing the rich diversity of voices. The global Church was fully represented, and each voice-whether from the laity, religious communities, or the hierarchy was treated with reverence. The discussions revealed both the challenges and opportunities that come with building a synodal Church.
This experience reaffirmed my own vocation and the importance of communal discernment in the Church. It was a moment of grace, where the seeds of renewal and deeper communion were planted, and I am grateful to have played a small part in this sacred process.
