One cannot help but be moved by the humility of Jesus as He chose to enter Jerusalem not in a majestic way but on a donkey. True greatness often comes from humility and service rather than power and prestige. This triumphant return to Jerusalem just days before his crucifixion defeats sin and death by his complete emptying of self. The actions of Jesus are always motivated by love. Jesus ’victory over death is at the heart of our faith. Palm Sunday focuses on the values of humility, service and peace.

The story of Palm Sunday tells us how people removed their cloaks and spread them out in front of Jesus as he entered Jerusalem.  The cloak we wear every day is both the image we want to portray to the world and is our defence against the elements. As we begin our Holy week celebrations may we be willing to lay down our defences and disguises at the feet of the One who sees us are we really are.

Jesus’  triumphant entry into   Jerusalem was short lived and  as the events of Holy week unfolded he became the villain.   Pilate wanting to release Jesus asked the crowd three times what he should do with Him. Each time they shouted “Crucify Him! Crucify Him!” This reminds us  that sometimes we give  praise for what is said or done but there are times when acceptance and comfort are most needed, we too shout our cry of ‘crucify’ in various ways. We can never fathom the depths and feelings of others but as a church and individuals, we are called to look for ways to reach out to those who are lonely, vulnerable, sick or encountering what seems to them as insurmountable problems in their lives.  As Christians we need to shout ‘Hosanna’ in every moment of our lives, in times of joy, sorrow, loss, heartbreak, and in the face of all that militates against freedom, acceptance and commitment to the One who gave us His All.

As we celebrate Holy Week  let us be overtaken by God’s love and let us pour it into our own lives, the lives of the people around us and all those we come in contact with.

Have a blessed Holy Week!
